Stoked on sapiosexuality

So, I'm really stoked that quite a few people are listing sapiosexuality as an interest. Considering that on Sunday, the 10th, there were only two people that had it listed as an interest. Today, there are nine. Not bad for a word that I invented in 1998.

I think much of this is the fault of [info]jadine and her entry from yesterday. In her entry, she asked what sapiosexuality meant and so I thought it might be good for me to attempt a definition as well.

Here's an e-mail that I sent out a while back on what I mean by sapiosexual. The message was in response to "What gender do you prefer in sex and/or a relationship?"

Me? I don't care too much about the plumbing. I want an incisive, inquisitive, insightful, irreverent mind. I want someone for whom philosophical discussion is foreplay. I want someone who sometimes makes me go ouch due to their wit and evil sense of humor. I want someone that I can reach out and touch randomly. I want someone I can cuddle with.

I decided all that means that I am sapiosexual. I want to fuck with peoples minds. :)

I invented this term while on too little sleep driving up from SF in the summer of '98 and I'm trying to propagate it as much as possible. So please use it when appropriate...

But where's the gender in all that? That people that I find like that also happen to have marvelous, wonderful bodies happens to be a perq. Flesh is fun...

So, this is what I mean by sapiosexual. The last two sentences of the first paragraph aren't really a part of sapiosexuality; they're just what I want.

So, to steal a line from jadine's journal, If you like this term, you may want to add it to your Interests list by clicking here.

Edit: When describing sapiosexuality to someone at the Grind, I came up with the phrase: "You can only fuck someone for so long (5-8 hours is finite) but you can talk forever."

Great word and definition!

I think I would take out the word sexuality if I were to use the term for my self. I may be physically attracted to men but I find myself attracted in all OTHER ways to the type of person you describe in your term.... Thanks to sheherezahde I've been introduced to your wonderful new word :) Thanks for creating it.

Neat idea. I like my women tough, cynical and witty. Does that count? Or does it have to transcend gender?

If you're applying it to yourself, you get to define as you like. To get any use out of the word, though, your definition needs to be similar without contradicting the important parts. In this case, the important part is intelligence. Gender is more of a don't-care attribute. I don't define gender since it doesn't apply to me. If it matters to you, then you should apply gender to the degree which makes you comfortable.

I don't know. I don't think it's specific enough. Give me a word for "emotionally attracted to intelligent women but not really emotionally attracted at all to men but physically attracted to both women and men". May I suggest heterocognibicorpisexuality?

[info]wolfieboy

No one is keeping you from using other terms for yourself. :)

I use to use omnisexual or pansexual depending on my mood; specifically not worrying about gender, race, or species. But I realized that I wanted to have deep conversations before, during, and after sex. Thus the genesis.

Heh... I'd like to cast in a set of competing terms taht I use....

  • Metasexual
  • Omnisexual

Not an emphasis on the mind, as you have, but an emphasis on the individual. The person themselves, apart from gender.

[info]deliriumcrow

October 23 2002, 05:13:05 UTC 9 years ago

I like metasexual, and Ubersexual, from an earlier post, though I don't think I'll actually use any of these term to describe myself. I don't like to be labeled, and depending on how I"m feeling on a given day, it may or may not apply. And it's kinda silly to change your label every day just because, it gets confusing to everyone else. I'm just Catelike, except for when I'm not.

It's kinda funny the way different words have so many different connotation, though, that in the dictionary mean exactly the same thing.

Wonderful word

Just found this after trying to figure out what sapiosexuality meant (after seeing on the journals of several people I know). Very very cool. ^_^ Very pertinent for me, captures exactly how I would describe myself.

Re: Wonderful word

I'm glad that you like it. I'm trying to get it common enough so that it makes it into the dictionary. I've been told that with the next edition of the OED coming out in 2010, we can expect another edition in 2060. I'm aiming for the latter date...

Have fun...
