Meeting people
I'm at a party in Berkeley and I saw both Al Billings and Elena. This is very cool. I thought I might go to a party and not know anybody. Well, so much for that. *gryn*

power outage
So, we are without power here in Northgate. The other houses in the area are also dark. Reported this to Seattle City Light about 30 minutes ago. We're still not on the outage line. Someone else has power twelve blocks south on the same cross street. Hmm.

It's been raining a bit hard today and then about 8p, we had a flicker. The about five minutes later, we had two flickers in a row and the power has stayed out so far, thirty-five minutes later…

P.S. Still without power. I'm posting from my G1.

Update: City Light updated the outage line about three minutes after I called. The outage is from 100th to 120th. It was from a power pole fire, presumably from lightning. They say most power should be rerouted within the hour and the pole replaced by midnight.

Thoughts on disability and mourning
A brief conversation that reflects some of my state.

A co-worker today asked me how I was doing and I talked about how my dad is doing; about how he's just really not there much any more; about the five minutes of lucidity that he's granted a day. Goodheartedly, he said Well, maybe it will get better.

It told him, Unfortunately, it won't. It will only stay the same or get worse. And eventually my family will be able to mourn the man that he was. But he won't ever get better.

Possibly this was unfair to someone who was trying to give comfort. But it just sprung forth from me and really does reflect where portions of my thoughts are these days.

Exploring the Moon, Discovering the Earth
I don't think that it is only stress that makes me tear up when reading this article: Exploring the Moon, Discovering Earth. Here's hoping that we actually -do- make it back.

In a related note, Here is an article where the LRO can show where we've been on the moon. Again, here is hoping that we can make new marks soon.

Gaming Night at TELS on June 3rd at 7.00p (Last one at TELS)
It's the final Gaming Night at TELS on Wednesday, June 3rd at 7.00p. We will eventually have gaming again some place else but this will be it for TELS.

It's okay to just show up for a few minutes and say goodbye to the place. We, of course, will exhort you to stay.

If you need directions to get there, please ask.

In the past, we've played Primordial Soup, Duel of Ages, Game of Real Life, San Juan, Cricket Cricket, Settlers/Seafarers/Cities & Knights of Catan, Apples to Apples, Nodwick, Fluxx, Chrononauts, ImaginIff, Falling, Snits Revenge, Awful Green Things, Illuminati, Lunch Money, and others. It depends on what the folks that show up prefer as well as what they bring. Folks are welcome to bring their own games as well.

Note that many people _haven't_ played these games. Most of them are not overly complex and some can be taught on the fly. We do teach the rules before we play, so don't worry if the games aren't familiar.

It's okay to show up a little late to his since we usually play something light first, waiting for folks to show up.

Please feel free to show up. Bring snacks if you'd like although some snacks will be provided.

Leaving on a Jet Plane but I -do- know when I'll be back.
klicrai and I are flying out to DC today and we'll be there for two weeks for our honeymoon. We're going to meet my parents and spend most of the time at the Smithsonian. Much fun will be had. I realized a few days ago that I've never taken a two week vacation before…

I would like it if I could get everyone's address. Christina and I want to send out Wedding Announcements. We'd also like to announce a potluck on May 30th. I say like because we just don't know that we'll have enough time to do it when we come back. We should've done this a bit ago. But this does mean that you should reserve the 30th of May for a potluck and you should provide me with your physical mail address:

Summary of Today (tattoo, marriage, food!)

So, what happened today:

  • Woke up late.
  • Went with klicrai to Slave to the Needle and got ring tattoos. Pictures later when I pull off the plastic wrap.
  • Christina and I got married at the King Co. Courthouse with Tami, Jim, John, Kelci, and Deb as witnesses.
  • All of us then went to Saffron Grill and had really good food

Yay! *bounce*

Flash games - Poke-A-Muscle
I've never been very good at memorizing the muscle names. I just don't do names that well. I can make some guesses based on the Latin names but that's about the best I can do.

klicrai pointed me toward a really cool flash app called Poke-A-Muscle which works pretty well. Possibly over time, I might even learn some of these, enough to recall them on demand. It's one of many apps written by a PE teacher in Melbourne. Very cool.

Have a name for my dad's Pathology
Well, I finally have a name for my dad's pathology. It's Front Temporal Dementia. He has the style relating to executive function. As the article says this means that he is unable to perform skills that require complex planning or sequencing. This means things like tying his shoes. Considering that we used to joke about how my dad only ever did two things wrong, this is a pretty radical difference. If you want to hear about that story, just ask in the comments or in person.

The next section says Some patients remain fluent with normal phonology and syntax but increasing difficulty with naming and word comprehension. Considering he gave me a lot of my love for words, language, and questioning; this is another really big deal.

It does make me sad that this is happening but at least now, I have a handle I can grasp rather than idiopathic cerebral degeneration. It gives me something to research and something to call it.

Bittersweet isn't quite the right mood since I want a word meaning sadness tinged with happiness rather than vice-versa. I know there is a word meaning this and I know there is a term reflecting that word's relationship with bittersweet but I can't think of either of them.

I'm engaged!
I'm writing a longer post that is a general update of the last six months. But I wanted to write this one separately so that it doesn't get lost in the noise.

I'm engaged to klicrai! We were thinking of trying to plan a wedding and realized that it would be too much stress for both us and our guests. So, we're planning on taking a roller coaster tour for our wedding and we'll have a potluck party sometime after we come back.

Yay!

Birthday Dinner *on* tonight at the Saffron Grill at 5p
Yes, we're having my Birthday Dinner tonight at the Saffron Grill as mentioned in this entry. Again, it's at 5p and Saffron Grill is at 2132 N Northgate Way.

I might've been able to mention this before except that I had to go pick up my Birthday present from Comcast. The cable "modem" died last night and so I was offline until just a little bit ago.

Happy Birthday to Me!
My 42nd birthday is next Saturday and I'm aiming for it being a bit more low-key than usual. If folks are interested, I'd like you to come to Saffron Grill next Saturday at 5p. Saffron Grill is in Northgate, just east of Meridian, near Northgate Transit Center. The address is 2132 N Northgate Way; Seattle. This is the same owner as who used to own Cedar's in the U District; the food is top-notch.

Please RSVP if you can. It will go much better if we can get a handle on who will be there.

Thanks,
Torin

Now, better than never.
I have constipation of the livejournal. Lots of excuses, best is to just post. I've got a few epic posts that I've been working on but they're not ready; they seem to be serving as the loperamide of the journal.. I'm going to apply a bit of laxative to my writing and maybe a bit will come out. They might just be farts of writing but at least they're writing. Applying these metaphors seems to be the best way to get this out. You have to admit that I'm a bit earthy at times.

I do seem to be a bit depressed today. This surprises me though it might not surprise some of you. I wasn't depressed last Thanksgiving though, so why this one? Part of it might be the pain from my crushed teeth. I'm really looking forward to seeing the Dentist on the 9th. Part of it might be the 2nd; endings are sad even if they're necessary.

Thanks to all of you that have stayed with me even though I've been wildly inconsistent in keeping up. More thanks later, posting now rather than letting this stew and end up never posting like so many other posts.

I've been sick for a bit
The stress from the Divorce Mediation last Wednesday suppressed my immune system enough such that I got sick from about mid-Wednesday to early Saturday. Most of Saturday I was doing fine. But then on Sunday, I was very definitely -not- doing okay. I seem to be mostly over it. I've been very congested, rather achy, and been having difficulty with body-temperature control. I was mostly non-sensate and generally non-available yesterday (Wednesday) as slept as I could most of the night, much of the day, and much of last night too. I slept more today and seem to be doing better now. I'm hoping it stays that way. It's not a comfy feeling to wake up feeling like I'm drowning because the act of breathing is blocked too much for me to do it while sleeping. Thankfully, I haven't had that today.

Here's for feeling better.

Cancelling Dim Sum
I'm canceling Dim Sum, at least for me from this point forward. Considering how it ended, having a celebration of the beginning of the relationship seems inappropriate to me. Yes, it was only at the root of the celebration and not the current cause. But the association is too much.

I do want something to replace it though. What sort of event do folks think sound good?
