I've been looking for longans lately since this is the season for them and had been frustrated. I found them at Uwajimaya last week but they wanted $7.99/pound for poor quality. Since longans are available fresh about two weeks out of the year, I was wondering if I'd get any of them this year at all. I was very please when a friend of ours found some at Central Market and when we got there, there were still some available. Longans (literally dragon-eye) are similar to the more common lyechee but the flavor is a bit more subtle. Lyechee are spiky while longan are smooth and usually served on the branch. cindygerb and I first had them about 10 years ago when we saw them being served in a chinese restaurant and asked what they were. We've been hooked since.
